Call to Lifting Economic Sanctions

Archbishop Roger Mahony, February 27, 1989

The Nicaraguan people have, in their majority, issued a clear call for change, for an end of conflict and a new start at rebuilding their society. All parties involved in this remarkable outcome--the government, the opposition and the unprecented array of international observers--deserve the praise of those who seek peace in Central America.

It is essential now that our own government move swiftly and decisively to begin healing the broken relationship between our two countries. As a start, all the economic burdens that have been placed by our country on Nicaragua should immediately be lifted and a realistic program of assistance to this beleaguered people be given priority consideration.
