Nanook of the North -- Following a year in the life of a nomadic Eskimo family, the documentary begins with Nanook's annual visit to a Hudson Bay trading post where he barters his furs for supplies, then packs the family back to the tundra to hunt for more, despite the harsh elements and the hardships of the vast icy wastes. Filmmaker Robert Flaherty finds humor as well as drama in the daily rounds of the Arctic family and their many travails, including the threat of starvation when Nanook gets lost in a blizzard. The result is a richly human experience that has more to do with poetry than with journalistic reportage. (A-I) (br) ( 1922 )
