HomeOur Men Off to Havana
In a USCCB delegation sponsored by the Church in Latin America, Office of National Collections, Subcommittee member and Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley led fellow USCCB Members, Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando and Bishop Oscar Cantu, Auxiliary of San Antonio on a five-day visit to Cuba, August 17-21, 2009. It’s not the first time for O’Malley and Wenski, who have visited many times bringing concrete aid and prayerful support to the Cuban Church and the Cuban people.
The visit comes a year after the U.S. Bishop Subcommittee on Latin America gave almost $1 million to help the Cuban Church recover after hurricanes Gustav and Ike battered the island in September 2008. The delegation will meet with Church and government officials and discuss issues of mutual concern such as, pastoral training, faith formation, migration and overall U.S-Cuba policy. USCCB has been a strong advocate for passage of the “Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act,” currently in both the House and Senate.
