Scholarships

The Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe accepts applications for support of projects for the Church in the countries listed below:

Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Application forms may be obtained from the local bishop's office in the countries listed, requested from this office, or downloaded from this webpage. Completed applications should be submitted to this office by mail. You can also apply online – see the buttons at right. To return to a partially completed online application click here.

The form must be completed in English. The applicant must obtain the endorsement of the local bishop and the endorsement of the appropriate official of the episcopal conference, if a conference has been established. No application will be considered without these endorsements.

An applicant may also submit supporting materials such as drawings, plans, photographs, or other documents that may be useful for the members of the United States bishops' committee in making their decision to commit funds in support of a particular project.

The Subcommittee meets twice yearly to review applications. The meetings are normally held in mid-June and mid-November. Applications must be submitted in accordance with the schedule below.

Please note that scholarships for the Academic Year 2010-2011 have already been awarded. Applications for scholarships for the Academic Year 2011-2012 must be submitted by 30 April 2011.

The office will assign a project number to each application and will send the applicant a confirmation of receipt. Please refer to the project number in all subsequent correspondence.

Applicants whose requests are not approved by the Subcommittee will be notified shortly after the committee meets. Applicants whose requests are approved will be notified by letter, only when funds to support the project become available.


Application Form

All applications for grants must be submitted in English on a standard application form. There is a separate application form specifically for SCHOLARSHIP grant requests. You may obtain these forms by:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.: May I e-mail an application to the Office?

A.: No. The Office does not accept applications by e-mail. All applications should be mailed by regular postal service.

Q.: If I have faxed an application to the Office, do I also need to send it by mail.

A.: Yes.

Q.: If I have the endorsement of my local bishop, do I need to have the endorsement of the appropriate bishops' conference official?

A.: Bishops' conferences have been established in most countries of central and eastern Europe. Applications originating from those countries must bear the signature of the appropriate bishops' conference official. For applications from countries without a bishops' conference, please obtain the endorsement of the apostolic nuncio.
